Pearl Harbor Hero Was from Waco
Published Apr 24, 2008

A Waco native was at the epicenter of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Doris “Dorie” Miller was a ship’s cook in the U.S. Navy on that fateful day of Dec. 7, 1941. He was aboard the battleship USS West Virginia when the attack occurred, and Miller helped carry wounded sailors to areas of safety during the ordeal. He then manned an anti-aircraft machine gun, even though he wasn’t trained for it.

Miller’s bravery earned him the Navy Cross in 1942, but he was killed two years later in the sinking of the escort carrier USS Liscome Bay. In 1973, a Navy escort ship was named the USS Miller in his honor.
